Band Biography
Alice in Thunderland
Rockin the U.K. since 1995
Alice in Thunderland (AKA AIT) are a four-piece rock/metal band from East Yorkshire, fronted by the powerhouse vocals of Kala. Her voice can be soaring and sweet one moment, with a biting edge the next—always commanding the stage and drawing the crowd in.
Stu drives the band forward with powerful drumming that’s tight, punchy, and relentless.
Adding to the tight rhythm section, Kev lays down a massive sound on bass that rattles the walls and shakes the floor, giving every song the thunder it deserves.
Meanwhile, new guitarist Flash brings flamboyant flair and a rainbow of colour to the stage, his blazing solos as eye-catching as his wardrobe.
We play our own original material and love to throw in some rock classics for good measure—because those are the songs that shaped us! We’ve recorded 6 albums at Powerstage Studios and shared stages with legends like Tim "Ripper" Owens, Blaze Bayley, and Tygers of Pan Tang to name a few.
We’re here to bring you the best of our world, one gig at a time—no fuss, just rock. Let’s make some noise!

Kala
Vocalist and Songwriter
I grew up in Bridlington, England in a family full of music lovers. At every party, someone was expected to “do a turn” — and that often included me!
Thursday nights were sacred: everything stopped for Top of the Pops. We’d gather around the TV, eager to see who had made the Top 20. I’ll never forget the first time I saw Suzi Quattro — she hit me like a thunderbolt! This tiny powerhouse was belting out a song while playing a guitar nearly as big as she was. I was mesmerized.
When I was four, my mum and uncle took over a nightclub. My sister and I spent weekends and summer holidays helping out — bottling up and cleaning. Our payment? Free plays on the jukebox. We’d dance and sing in the darkened club, lit only by the disco lights. It felt magical.
Around that time, my aunt took us and our cousins to Butlins for the day. We went swimming (I nearly drowned, but that’s another story). They had these little recording booths, and we made a record together. I’ll never forget the thrill of hearing our own voices played back at home — it felt like pure joy.
Our junior school placed a big emphasis on music — singing, instruments, choirs. For me, it was the perfect escape from the classroom. Singing in the school choir, surrounded by other voices, gave me goosebumps.
After school, I went to art college, and I really missed singing. So I started lessons with a retired music teacher. She was incredible — patient, encouraging, and wise. I was so nervous at my first lesson, I could barely breathe. She asked me to sing a note, and out came this weird little squeak! We both laughed, and that moment started a beautiful friendship. She gave me the confidence to find my voice.
Not long after, I met Kev (Truelove) and fell in love. He played bass in a local band whose singer was about to move away. Kev knew I’d been having lessons and asked if I’d try out. I told him I wasn’t good enough — too nervous to sing in front of people. But he persuaded me, and, well… the rest is history.
At my first gig, I was shaking. Our guitarist’s wife, Mel, told me to look at her any time I got overwhelmed — and she made funny faces to calm me down. It worked.
Our first band together was Cool Zero, named after a song by one of my favourite singers, Pat Benatar. Later, we became No Quarter, and finally, Alice in Thunderland.
We started off playing our favourite covers, but soon began writing original songs. That’s when the magic really started. I love how songs seem to come from nowhere — how they grow and take on a life of their own. I also love the recording process. We’ve always recorded at Powerstage Studios with the Bolton family — first with Sid and Zoe, and later with Mikey. It’s always a joy, filled with laughter and creativity.
Being in this band has given me so many incredible memories — and the best part has been meeting new fans, many of whom have become like family to us.

Bass Guitar, Songwriter
I've been a rock fan since my school days, inspired by bands like Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, and Led Zeppelin.
After leaving school, a few friends and I decided to start a band. Everyone wanted to be the guitarist, so I took up the bass. My first instrument was a £20 Hondo Rickenbacker copy. We called ourselves Xanthrazona and mostly played rock covers at local gigs. One of our highlights was supporting a local band called Badge, who had just released their first record on Neat Records. I became friends with their guitarist, Tony Dixon, and when their bassist left, I had the chance to join the band.
After a couple of years, I left to form my own band, Madras — “the hottest band in Brid,” ha ha! Around that time, I met Michaela and convinced her to try out for a new project I was putting together. That band went through a few names — Cool Zero, then No Quarter, and finally Alice in Thunderland, formed with Kala, Stu Millington and Tony Dean. Together we wrote hard hitting riffs with catchy melodic hooks and infectious grooves. We later met the Bolton family at Powerstage Studios and recorded all six of our albums there with Mikey Bolton.
A few years ago, I fulfilled a long-time dream: having a custom bass built to my own specs by Druzkowski Guitars. I currently use Taurus and GR amplification with Barefaced cabs.

Drums, Keyboards
Where to start? I guess my 50 year music adventure began when I was 9 or 10 years old. A teacher at my school thought I had a decent singing voice and should join a local church choir or similar. Within a few months I was a chorister with two church choirs which was to last for about 5 years…until my soprano voice broke and I became an alto! In that time I also went to piano lessons and drum lessons and continued with these until I was 18, when I left my home town to go to college…I took my drum kit with me!
I was fortunate to have a great choir master, drum tutor and piano teacher and learnt a lot in that time, covering the basics of being a musician.
Over the years, I have played the drums and piano/keyboards in various situations, both studio recordings and live gigs. I have been fortunate to share the stage and studio with some great musicians and made many friends along the way.
Some of the bands I have been involved with include The Spies (Ska/Reggae), Soft Footwear (silly name I know! Early indie style rock), Stallion (NWOBAM), Cool Zero/No Quarter (Classic Blues Rock) and for the last 28 years, Alice in Thunderland.
Looking forward to the future of AIT, expanding our gig list and venues played. Keep Rockin'!

Flash D

Guitars, Backing Vocals, Songwriter, Producer
Flash D has hard rock and heavy metal running through his veins like molten steel. Hailing from the windswept hills of rural North Yorkshire, just outside the gothic seaside town of Whitby, Flash brings raw, unfiltered energy to the guitar—reflecting both his roots and his razor-sharp passion for heavy music.
As the axe-wielding force behind AIT, Flash is known for crafting rich, tasty riff-cakes layered with solos that drip emotion and explode with excitement. Whether he's laying down thunderous rhythms or tearing through a face-melting lead, his playing is always larger than life—massive, melodic, and full of fire. Flash also composes intricate, melodic clean pieces charged with emotion, adding dynamic contrast and depth to AIT’s sonic palette.
On stage, Flash is a full-on spectacle. Decked out in flamboyant ‘80s glam metal-inspired attire and shredding on colourful Ibanez JEM guitars in tribute to Steve Vai, he blends style and sound into an unforgettable experience.
His signature tone channels a trio of guitar legends: the soulful ferocity of John Sykes, the electrifying flair of Kirk Hammett, and the unchained intensity of Dimebag Darrell. Those influences, fused with his own creative spirit, make every AIT performance a masterclass in modern metal guitar.
“My guitar journey began at 14, when my dad bought me my first electric guitar, an Encore strat with a little Drive amplifier. I had some lessons the first couple of years…got taught the basics and some AC/DC, Dire Straits and Gary Moore. On some weekends I’d be at my dad’s playing board games and he’d always be playing his rock, pop and metal records from the ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s.
“I’ve been a part of many bands and projects, exploring many sub genres of rock and metal, starting with Voodoo Dragon (classic rock, heavy metal), Tender Venom and RCBP (metalcore) between 2003 - 2007, playing gigs at The Rifle Club in Whitby and the a few nearby village halls.
“When I studied Music Production at Westwood campus in Scarborough (2007-2010), I played in Schtick (prog/thrash/groove), Reformed Union (electronic rap metal ) and As The Sky Runs Red (screamo/metalcore).
“Between around 2012 – 2023 I gigged nationally in thrash bands Nexus One and Apollolyptic. Alongside all these bands I've composed and recorded my own solo stuff, including all of these plus some electronic and classical music.
Now I’m in AIT and life is pretty brilliant! We’re gigging all over the place and having an absolute blast doing it. I love the creative and friendly dynamic that we have, and it's exciting to be collectively gushing with creative ideas. Long may it continue!”
What sets Flash apart is not just his technical ability, but the emotion and identity he pours into every note. He doesn’t just play guitar—he tells stories with it, swinging between crushing heaviness and haunting beauty.
Today, Flash D stands as a sonic architect of heavy music. With passion, precision, and personality, he’s crafting the future of metal one riff at a time—proving that in a world of noise, true power lies in playing from the heart.
